Chapter Twelve -Without Excuse

Damek irritably weaved leaves in and out, trying to get the same results Neveah did, to make a covering for himself. What she did so naturally was impossible for him. He just didn’t have the patience for it. For some reason he lived with the fear that the Master would return and find him naked. He had to get this tunic finished. He glanced at Neveah already wearing hers, long hair flowing about her shoulders and looking very satisfied as she tucked it in here and there for a better fit. Frustrated to begin with because she didn’t want to make his, he felt he was doing his best to make it work. He stood up hoping it would all stay together and remain on him as he walked about which it finally did.

“All right” he sighed. “It’s going to have to be good enough.” Then he heard it, that which he had been so afraid of. The voice of the Master which had always before brought great peace and joy now filled him with dread. He looked over to see Neveah’s reaction to the voice but apparently she hadn’t heard it at all. She was humming and going about preparing food for their supper with no idea of any voice other than her own.

“Damek” The voice was cool, somewhat distant but still gentle. Damek checked to see if all his leaves were still holding together and turned in the direction of the voice. “Master! I hear….” He froze as the Master appeared before him out of the shadow of the forest. Neveah, finally aware of the Master herself, quietly came up behind him until she stood silently at his side. “I have been searching for you yet you have hid yourselves from me. You have never done that before” Pain was obvious in the Master’s voice.

“We…I was naked and did not want you to see me.” Damek stammered. “You never wore any of those ridiculous leaves before and you weren’t ashamed. What happened?” The Master, although he knew, needed to hear it from them, so he waited. Even more guilt and shame filled Damek as he heard his own voice blaming Neveah but he couldn’t help himself. “But Damek, you could have told her “no”. You had that choice. You could even have tried to reason with her or most importantly, you could have asked me for help! Why did you not do these things?”

The Master waited while Damek searched for words, for some excuse that made sense but there was none to be had. He just bowed his head and tried to suppress tears of misery that began to flow down his face. “I am sorry Master. I have failed you, Neveah and myself, but most of all the Creator. I am without excuse.” Neveah also looked down but spoke not a word. She also, covered with shame knew something very precious had been lost. The consequences were tremendously terrible and it was too late now to turn back. Chapter-Thirteen - Cast Out of the Garden
