Chapter Ten - Neveah and the Serpent
Neveah found herself continually in front of the tree. She hardly spoke to Damek any more. When she awoke in the morning, she hurried through breakfast with him and left to stand in the presence of the tree. Damek responded by also leaving in the morning and wandering through the Garden checking on the animals. He didn’t need to but it gave him something to do since he didn’t want to be with Neveah while she stared at the tree. He was afraid of its hold on her and he knew it had the same attraction for him. If he gave in to it just a little, he knew it would be all that was needed for him to partake of the fruit.
Gone was the peace and joy of their lives. No longer did they bask in each others presence, sharing their love and wonder of each other. In its place was suspicion, distraction and desire for the forbidden fruit. Damek almost wished they could just go ahead and eat of it and get it over with. He couldn’t endure what their lives had turned into. Anything would be better than what it was now. Little did he know that the Serpent was already putting the finishing touches on his plan for them to do just that. Now, their partaking of the fruit was from their own decision, their own mind’s imaginations were telling them what to do. He didn’t even need to plant any more thoughts!
“This is almost too easy!” He laughed. He saw the woman approach the tree again, drawn inexplicably to the temptation of its alluring fruit. Suddenly he became alert and serious. He knew this was the time, the moment when she was at her peak of willingness. It was now or never. He would show himself.
“Hello beautiful Neveah”. His voice was as silky and smooth as the shiny skin of his long, winding body wrapped around the tree.
Shocked, she looked about to see who knew she was there. A sense of shame enveloped her as she thought that the Master might know. She didn’t care any more if Damek knew. He had become nothing more than an obstacle preventing her from being with the object of her desire. Then she saw the Serpent coiled around the trunk of the tree. His eyes caught hers in an instant and entrapped her gaze and he channeled his energy into her through his eyes. She couldn’t move or speak or think. In that second, the Dark Master entered her body and took over her mind. No longer would she call upon the Master. She wouldn’t be content now until she brought Damek to the tree so he also could partake.
Serpent released her from her paralysis and immediately she reached out her arm and grasped one of the nearest fruits of the tree. Indulging, she ate one after the other until she was satiated. The Serpents work was finished and he disappeared. Neveah no longer noticed or cared if he was there or not. She left the tree and went to find Damek.
