Chapter Seven - The Tree in the Garden
Damek rested in great peace when the work was finally done. Time had melted into Eternity and he joined his spirit with those of the living creatures as he named them. He loved them as himself and knew satisfaction and joy in fulfilling the task the Creator had asked of him. The new Master was now his tried and true Guardian and friend and he felt the presence of Nevaeh with him continually, not needing to be with her physically to know her wonderful essence. Throughout this time, they had formed a consciousness together within their souls which Damek realized was the foundation of what they would have together in other ways in the future.
Then one day the Master came to him and led him to a special place in the middle of the Garden.
“It is now time for you to know about the tree.” He said.
“The tree?” Damek wondered what the Master was talking about.
“Yes. You have been told that you may eat of every tree in the garden. They are all good for you for food.” The Master looked at him somewhat sympathetically which worried Damek a little. He had the feeling, that once again, something was going to change.
“Yes, I know that, Master.”
“There is more to it than that, Damek. Every tree is not good for you, in fact there is one tree that you must never touch. If you ever eat of it, on that day, you will die.”
Damek felt a chill through his body as the cold words penetrated his mind. Never before had the Master spoken in such a manner. He immediately knew the seriousness of such an action and a strange fear settled into his heart. He would never touch that tree.
“Never, never”. he thought. The Master moved close to him and touched his shoulder softly, as if trying to lighten the suddenly tense atmosphere.
“Damek, it is named, The Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and it is right there”. He extended his arm toward a beautiful tree, thick with delicious appearing ripe fruit hanging from every branch. With surprise, Damek looked upon its fruit and wondered at its evilness. How could this lovely tree have such dire consequences if partaken of! He felt a strange desire deep inside grow toward the tree as he looked at it with a longing for something he had never known but knew he desperately needed. For a moment, entranced, he forgot where he was and felt a connection with the tree beyond the Garden itself. When he regained the reality of where he was and who he was with, he looked into the sad eyes of the Master. “Don’t worry, Master” He whispered, “I will never touch that tree. I will never eat its fruit. I promise you!”
